Cleanity is a youth-driven initiative, that prides itself on direct environmental and action, through community based cleanups, education, and programming that is accessible. Cleanity is focused on reducing waste from shared spaces, changing the public's perception of responsiblity, and making participation in any environmental action something that is real, ongoing, rather than intangible and intermittent. Cleanity believes that real change starts at home. This could mean day-of events, organizing cleanups in parks or neighborhoods, creating systems and tools that would allow volunteers to manage and quantify their efforts, and creating educational opportunities for younger students, about sustainability and the effect of waste in the long run. Our work embodies reliability and experiential learning, we want to teach youth that they care about waste, the environment, and the future.
To us environmental degradation is not something that is abstract, it is present, visible, and urgent. It is something we walk past, every day. Cleanity exists in that awareness and is looking for ways to find real solutions created by the people who deal with it. We do not believe that we should rely on institutions or hierarchical organization, we believe that our grassroots work is a response to 'top down' organizations working in the community and youth can lead their own community. Our method is collaborative, and responsive, it also celebrates the idea that public spaces are worth caring for, and when participants, particularly youth, are offered all the tools and space to participate, they will effect real, tangible change.
